A well-known human rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong was sentenced by a Chinese court to two years in prison, becoming the latest to be convicted in Beijing’s crackdown on activists.

Jiang Tianyong has been found guilty of “inciting subversion of state power”  and also of insulting China’s political system.

His wife told international media that the verdict was “unacceptable”. Amnesty International has called the trial “a sham”.

Jiang Known As An Outspoken Critic Of The Chinese Government

Mr Jiang had been a vocal critic of the Chinese government’s crackdown on activists and dissenters, and has represented some of those detained by authorities.

According to estimates, over 300 lawyers, activists and legal assistants have so far been questioned with over two dozen of them having been pursued as formal investigations.

Mr Jiang has earlier defended several fellow rights lawyers , human rights activists as well as Tibetan protesters and Falun Gong practitioners .

The court has also convicted Mr. Jiang of using social media channels to attack the Chinese government and to incite others to hold public demonstrations .
