China has urged its citizens visiting India to not flout local laws and avoid restricted areas in a notice issued by its embassy in New Delhi, according to a report in South China Morning Post.
The notice issued by the Chinese Embassy did not provide any details of violations but warned its citizens against:
- Carrying prohibited items such as ivory and rhino horns
- Overstaying visas
- Working in India illegally
- Entering areas barred to foreigners
Cannot Tolerate Illegal Behaviour
The statement noted that there have been “consecutive cases” of Chinese citizens getting detained, investigated, fined or charged and sentenced as a result of “alleged law breaking in India.” It further stated that those violating the laws could be jailed or fined.
It observed that while the embassy will protect the safety of Chinese citizens and the “rightful claims” of Chinese enterprises or personnel in the country, it “cannot tolerate any illegal behaviour,”
In the days since the long-drawn Dokalam standoff with India, China has been issuing advisories to its travellers, which includes advice to pay attention to security in local areas and improve awareness for self-protection.
