Delhi High Court Dismisses the Plea against PK

The Delhi High Court has dismissed the plea to restrict the screening of the Amir Khan starrer PK. The division bench comprising of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw rejected to entertain the plea which sought a ban on the film for its alleged derogatory explanation against Hindu gods, Hindu beliefs, faith and worship in the movie.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday dismissed a PIL filed against Raj Kumar Hirani directed film ‘PK‘, saying “the film was not offensive”. The bench said: “What was wrong in the movie? We don’t find anything offensive in it. We don’t find any substance in the plea.” The court informed that it will pass the detailed on the plea later.

The law and order situation were affected at many places after the release of the film due to the protests and demonstrations seeking a ban on the film.

The PIL was filed by Ajay Gautam. He argued that the film ridiculed the Hindu gods and Lord Shiva was shown in bad light. “The Hindu way of worship has also been criticised in a most unwarranted manner,” he alleged. Ajay wanted the “objectionable” scenes from the movie to be deleted.

During the hearing Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain informed the court that the Supreme Court has already dismissed a similar case. Jain also told the court that there are restrictions to appeal against the certification of the movie. The courts said that the right to appeal against certification was restricted to the makers of the movie and are not open to the public.

Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma starrer ‘PK’ may have impressed the critics and audiences, but the depiction of Hindu sentiments in the film has drawn the anger of right-wing organisations which say the movie disrespects Hindu religion. However, the audience feels that PK is a film which has stirred the thoughts and caused discussion about the people who behaves as if they are the connecting link to God.

The fact that the movie has already collected over 280 crore shows that the controversy has only benefitted the box-office performance of the movie. Featuring Aamir as an alien, the film takes a hard hitting swipe at the way people worship God and at the God men.

Vinod Chopra Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films, released ‘PK’ in association with Disney India, on December 19 and since then the film has been soaring high at the box office. The film is performing well in the international market also. The film also stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjay Dutt.
