Extortion- Section 383 (Definition & Meaning)

Whoever intentionally puts any person in a fear of any kind of injury to that person, or to any other person, and thereby dishonestly induces that person who is so put in fear to deliver to any property or valuable security, or anything signed or sealed which may be converted into a valuable security, has committed the offense of “extortion”.

Illustration-

(a) A threatens to publish a defamatory statement in the context of  Z unless Z gives him money. He thus induces Z to give him money. A has committed the offense of extortion.

(b) A threatens Z that he will keep Z’s child in a wrongful confinement unless and until Z will sign and deliver to A promissory note binding Z to pay certain amount of money  to A. Z signs and delivers the note. A has committed the offense of extortion.
