Senior police officials in Maharashtra have said that the law and order situation was overall peaceful although incidents of stone pelting, rasta/rail roko andolans and damage to vehicles have been reported in areas of Pune, Thane, Aurangabad,  Washim Parbhani and Buldhana.

Additional director general of police (law and order) Bipin Bihari said that the Pune rural police had lodged five to six FIRs under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. He added that the police had questioned several people and detained 15-20 others after verifying facts. Bihari said that formal arrests would take place later.

Situation Tense But Under Control

In Pune Bihari  said that some incidents of stone pelting were reported, with one or two people injured. In Aurangabad a train was blocked which led to police being forced to fire a few rounds into the air to disperse the mob.

Stone pelting also took place in areas like Parbhani, Ahmednagar, Buldhana and Washim and while in Taane in addition to stone pelting , rasta roko was also reported. He clarified that there were so far no casualties and that the police force would “remain on alert.”

According to Pune district collector Saurabh Rao, the situation “is tense but under control.”

The cyber cell has issued a circular directing that no statements be made on social media encouraging violence  .

Sec 144 Promulgated

Seven units of State Reserve Police Force as well as local police have been deployed in areas of Vadhu, Koregaon Bhima, Shikrapur and Sanaswadi, Rao said. Further senior police officials, sub-divisional magistrate, and the superintendent of police (rural) are on location to control the situation.

Rao also added that Section 144 had been issued in  Shikrapur, Koregaon Bhima, Vadhu and Sanaswadi.

He stated that in all locations  witnessing clashes, the administration as well as the police officials are “negotiating and bringing reconciliation” in order to prevent  agitation on the spot or on social media.

Markets Shut In Some Areas

Resident deputy collector Rajendra Muthe stated after reports of some shops being shut in certain parts of the city, police had ensured no crowds in the area.

Muthe also said that the weekly vegetable market held on Thursday at Koregaon Bhima has been cancelled. Similarly the Mazi Kanya Bhagyashri programme in Balewadi has been cancelled.

The district administration arranged for the transportation of 33 women returning to Nagpur via train after their bus was intercepted in Kharadi by a mob.
