Personal Life of Ram Jethmalani
Ram Jethmalani was born in Shikarpur in the Sindh division (part of Pakistan today) and migrated to India during partition. One of Ram Jethmalani’s ancestors had fought aginst Napier and fled to Afghanistan later. The partition led him to Mumbai where he began his new life. Ram has married twice in his life. His first wife is Durga Jethmalani and the second wife is Ratna Jethmalani. However, this is not considered as bigamy as the Hindu Marriage Act was passed in 1955. He has two sons and two daughters. His son Mahesh Jethmalani and daughter Rani Jethmalani are well known lawyers.
He became a lawyer at the age of 17. At that time the age for becoming a lawyer was 21 however a special resolution was passed Ram Jethmalani and he completed his LLB degree at the age of 17 from S.C Shahani Law College. Ram has provided his counsel indiscriminately to dacoits, murderers, and politicians. He is also known for his strategic role in Nanawati case. During the emergency, he took shelter at Kerala and emerged as a politician in the post emergency period. He opposed every government other than that of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and served him as a minister. Ram served as Indian Union Law Minister and chairman of the Bar Council. Today, he is the highest-paid lawyer in India who has been involved in a pile of high-profile and controversial cases.
In 6th and 7th Lok Sabha elections, he was elected as a Member of Parliament on the ticket of Bhartiya Janta Party from Mumbai. He has served as Law Minister and Minister of Urban Development during the term of Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister of India. He was thrown out of the party by those he favored. Later he contested against Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the general elections of 2004 from Lucknow constituency. He came back to BJP in 2010 and was elected to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
