Supreme Court of India Rejects Justice (retired)  Karnan Bail

The Supreme Court refused Former Calcutta High Court judge CS Karnan’s request to suspend the sentence given to him and asked to serve six months in jail which was ordered early in May after declaring him guilty of contempt of court. He had gone underground a month ago, used false names to hide in resorts and switched cellphones to avoid being tracked down and was arrested last night in Tamil Nadu. He landed in Kolkata today and was taken to the city’s Presidency Jail.

The 62-year-old judge, CS Karnan became the first serving High Court judge to be sentenced to prison, by a bench 7 judges including Chief Justice of India JS Khehar.

Karnan in last January wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee accusing several senior judges of corruption. When, the apex Court ordered him to appear in person, he come once, and then skipped other hearings. Calcutta High Court was ordered by the top court, not assign any case to Justice (retired)  Karnan.

What followed was unprecedented was that for every order issued by the Court on his case he passed a counter order, even, at 1 point, he ordered the arrest of the Supreme Court’s judges.

Further, he refused to undergo any mental health tests despite the Supreme Court’s instruction.
