MUMBAI: A woman constable aged 29, in the Beed district has approached the Bombay High Court after her plea to undergo sex realignment surgery (SRS) was turned down by the  Maharashtra Police. As per the reports, the woman cop who has been serving in the police force since 2010 made the decision to undergo the sex change surgery after she felt more connected and attracted to the masculine gender than the feminine due to what she describes as hormonal imbalances.

The woman seeking permission for the sex change surgery wrote to her seniors but her application was rejected by Beed and the top officials of Maharashtra police.

Additional Director General of Police, (Establishments) Rajendra Singh said,”While I won’t be divulging our decision, at this point, I can only confirm that we have communicated our decision to the SP and the same would be told to the applicant.”

Her lawyer Ejaz Naqvi claims that on diagnosis and medical consultation at the Sir JJ hospital in Mumbai, she was told that her hormonal imbalances is incurable and thus she was advised to undergo plastic surgery or sexual reassignment.

The lawyer appealed to the authorities to allow her to undergo the surgery saying that his client’s human rights are at stake. He says he is seeking necessary orders as per Maharashtra Police Rules ensuring the cop right to equality and life.

“The family supports her decision to undergo the sex change surgery. We want the government and the police to have a more humane approach and not only grant her leave but also allow her to continue her job after the surgery”, said the lawyer.
