Artificial Intelligence Must Be Used For Augmenting Lawyers’ Capabilities Not Replacing

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the legal field must be used to augment lawyers’ capabilities,  but not for automating the profession itself , said Supreme Court judge Justice A K Sikri.

According to Justice Sikri, Artificial Intelligence helps an advocate to work more efficiently while discharging his duties but it cannot replace the advocacy provided by lawyers which is reflective of emotions and human empathy.

Justice Sikri made these observations while giving the keynote address at the launch of ‘Legitquest’, a legal-tech venture.

Cannot replace Lawyers’ Emotions Like Empathy

Justice Sikri noted that the artificial intelligence cannot help legal profession “when it comes to lawyers and judges such as delivering justice by the judge. “ He further pointed out that apart from some commercial cases, “factors of human empathy, equity, sense of justice, emotions those would remain” in law.

Justice Sikri pointed out that cases are decided based on law, but in sentencing, “mitigating and aggravating factor”  come into play .

One-Of-A-Kind Legal Platform

Backed by renowned jurist Ram Jethmalani , Legitquest  has a developed a unique platform that enables legal professionals to research efficiently by offering a vast and detailed legal database .

Justice Sikri emphasised that digital data will help in getting all relevant information, and said instead of replacing a lawyer, automation should be used for “for augmentation, so that it facilitates a lawyer to become more efficient.”

According to the developers of the tool, it’s the world’s first and only segregation system that provides users with all relevant information regarding case law at a single place including its facts, reasoning, arguments and decision.

Other luminaires who also spoke at the event include Jethmalani , the erstwhile apex court judge Justice B S Chauhan, and Delhi High Court judge Justice Ravindra Bhat.
