A protest is being planned by the lawyer’s unit of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) against the Centre’s decision to bring lawyers into the ambit of GST by adding them to the commercial category.

Sarfaraz Ahmed an advocate at district and Delhi high court stated that the legal profession was a noble one, but as a result of this decision they were now clubbed under a commercial category.

Ahmed noted that doctors were exempt from GST as a noble profession, and asked why the legal profession was not considered noble. He highlighted that the Delhi government was also charging lawyers’ officers commercial rates.

Ahmed stated that the lawyers’ wing of DPCC would be holding a protest rally at Raj Ghat on November 22.

K.C. Mittal, former chairperson, AICC legal wing, said that while Congress chief Ajay Maken was the Union Urban Development minister he had included lawyers within the category of professionals in the 2021 Master Plan resulting in commercial rates on power consumption etc not being charged for layers offices.

The Delhi Congress’s professional unit is additionally considering a campaign against the state government and the central government for failing to control pollution in the city.

Congress leader Chattar Singh alleged the Kejriwal government was not taking any steps to improve the quality of the city’s air despite alarming levels of pollution being recorded.
