Titagarh (West Bengal): India is preparing a law in order to safeguard its interest in Antarctica, said an official of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) on Tuesday.

“India does not have laws for Antarctica. We are formulating it and it is in circulation in the law ministry,” MoES secretary Madhavan Nair Rajeevan told the media.

“The law necessitates regulating our activities. When we go there and if a mistake is done by us, what will happen, what to do. It is all about safeguarding our own interests,” he said.

Rajeevan also mentioned that India is also enthusiastic to expand its research activities in the coldest continent.

“The Maitri station will be replaced by a new station in the upcoming three-to-four years. The expansion of Scientific activities will be seen. There is also a plan on buying a ship which can go to Antarctica,” Rajeevan added.Maitri, which is recognized as India`s second research station in Antarctica as part of the Indian Antarctic Programme, will be replaced by a new one in the next few years.
