Lawyers Appear To Defend Land Losers For Free In West Bengal

Several lawyers appeared free of charge in a West Bengal court for two men who had been arrested for allegedly attacking a Trinamul worker.

Nearly dozen lawyers, ten of whom from Calcutta High Court, turned up at a Bolpur court to defend the two accused.

The accused , Mirja Jasimuddin and Sheikh Anarul, belong to a movement protesting a housing project proposed on a 200 acre plot that had been acquired for industrial development at Shibpur.

The duo are among those from whom the land had been purchased for the project.

In addition to Jasimuddin and Anarul, the police had also arrested two Trinamul functionaries involved in the November 15 dispute.

The four accused were produced in court before the additional chief judicial magistrate in Bolpur, Arvind Mishra, where the dozen lawyers defended the land sellers.

The court however refused bail to all four. Firoz Kumar Pal, the assistant public prosecutor of the Bolpur court stated that Jasimuddin was sent to police custody for five days while the remaining were sent to judicial custody for a period of 14 days.

Legal Support For “Innocent Land Losers”

The dozen lawyers from Calcutta were headed by Rabishankar Chattopadhyay.

Chattopadhyay stated that the lawyers had come on their own initiative after hearing that the “innocent land losers” had been implicated in “false cases with harsh penal sections”.

The lawyers were appearing to offer legal support and also moral support, he said, adding that the help was entirely free.  Chattopadhyay further stated  that all the lawyers would come again if needed.

The lawyers from the high court argued on behalf of Anarul and Jasimuddin for nearly half hour during proceedings. Chattopadhyay and three others primarily presented the arguments.

The land losers said that they were pleased to get the legal support. Sheikh Masud, from Shibpur, noted that it was great to see a dozen lawyers appear for them in court and support their movement.
