India: Proposed Law On Fake News In Singapore May Spur India To Follow Suit

A committee constituted by the parliament in Singapore last month recommended a proposed law to curb the spread of fake of news, as well as advertisements on social networking sites to the Singapore government. Analysts believe that the move by the Singapore’s parliament may spur India which has been battling with the spread of fake news to toe the same line. In recent times, India has been considering legislation on the how to curb the spread of fake news.

 

India: Students’ Fight: BSWC Visits Patna Law College To Ensure Peace On Campus

The Bihar State Women Commission (BSWC) led by Dilmani Mishra and other three members on Thursday visited the  Patna Law College to meet the girl who reportedly stopped attending lectures due to the September 25 fight between students of the fifth semester and third semester. The group met some students and the college principal, Mohammad Sharif so that the issue could be resolved. Mishra alleged that Sharif was attempting to cover up the issue.

 

Australia: Lawyer Urges Government To Amend Laws Keeping Prisoners Indefinitely

A lawyer, Greg Barns who represented a Tasmanian man, Jamie Gregory McCrossen on Thursday called on the state to consider reforming the laws (Sentencing Act) which perpetually keeps prisoners in detention. Barns made the call after Justice Helen Wood set aside Jamie Gregory’s declaration. The release of Gregory would have been 26 years ago. Barns said the present Sentencing Act is extremely unfair and inhumane.

 

India: SC Upholds The Validity Of GST Law

The Supreme Court bench of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan on Thursday upheld the constitutionality of the GST law which permit the collection of a cess in order to compensate States which suffer revenue loss. After listening to a plea brought before it by a firm named Mohit Minerals, the court directed the company to pay the cess. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had ruled in favor of the company arguing that the company had paid a cess in line with the Finance Act, 2010. Recall that payment of a cess was introduced last year.

 

India: Improper Dressing: Delhi High Court Blows Hot On Two Passport Officials

The Delhi High Court bench of Justice Najmi Waziri on Thursday chided two passport officials for appearing in court with the improper dress. The court was determining the 1997 fire tragedy at the Uphaar cinema. A visibly angry Justice Waziri queried the lawyer representing the passport authority to bring the two passport officials dressed in casual wears.

 

USA: Associate Dean Resigns After Previous Writings On Gay Marriages And Women Spark Backlash

An associate dean, Brian McCall on Thursday resigned his position as the Dean College of Law, University of Oklahoma. McCall resigned after his previous writing on gay marriages and women came under heavy public scrutiny. This was made known by the University authorities. McCall had labeled gay marriages as “insanity” in his book titled “To Build the City of God: Living as Catholics in a Secular Age”.

 

India: Murder Case: Delhi HC Frees Suhaib Ilyasi

The Delhi High Court bench of Justices Vinod Goel and S Muralidhar on Thursday acquitted Suhaib Ilyasi, a popular ex-TV presenter in a case involving the murder of his wife over 18 years ago. After hearing the appeal of Ilyasi, the bench allowed his appeal. Aaliya, the daughter of Ilyasi expressed happiness over the decision of the court. Recall that a trial court had convicted Ilyasi of murdering his wife on the 20th of December, 2017.

 

India: De-registration From Sebi: Bombay HC Rejects Brokers’ Petition

The Bombay High Court bench of Justices M S Karnik and B R Gavai on Thursday rejected the suit filed by the National Spot Exchange Ltd brokers to de-register it from the Regulatory Authority, the Securities and Exchange Board of India. The court’s decision was on the grounds that the brokers wanted to avoid SEBI’s action over payment default. Meanwhile, the court noted that the market regulator had already issued SCN to all the brokers involved in the NSEL scam case.

 

Ireland: Parliament Considers Bill To Make Abortion Legal

The Irish parliament on Thursday debated a bill (The Regulation of the Termination of Pregnancy Bill) which sought to make abortion legal in the court. In may, the country had voted against the ban on abortion in a referendum. Irish Health Minister, Simon Harris in a statement on Thursday expressed hope that the law would see the light of the day before January 2019.

The Madras high court bench of Justice S.M. Subramaniam on Thursday ordered the authorities to Investigate the appointment of some unqualified law teachers at the law colleges and universities. A professor from the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, D.Shankar had to move the court to determine whether or not the appointments of some law lecturers were on merit. The court after hearing the petition of Professor Shankar directed the authorities to investigate and sanction any public servant involved in the nepotism appointments.

 

India: Delhi HC Constitutes Panel To Recommend Welfare Package For Lawyers’ Clerk

The Delhi High Court bench of Justices V K Rao and Rajendra Menon on Thursday constituted a panel to examine and recommend a suitable welfare package to the clerks working for lawyers. The panel consisting of the court’s Registrar General, the president and secretary of the court’s Bar Association. The clerk’s Association will send one nominee. The court’s decision was informed after hearing a PIL from the Clerks’ Association, which sought a welfare package.

 

Canada: Passengers Can Now Carry Cannabis On Board Airplane Within Canada

Passengers traveling within Canada can now carry marijuana in their luggage on board an Airplane. This was made known by the country’s transport officials following the passage into law on Thursday a bill to legalize carrying cannabis on Airplanes. The law, however, prohibits the practice on foreign routes and also pegged the maximum quantity to be carried to 30 grams. Despite this law, it is illegal to smoke marijuana on board a flying aircraft.

 

USA: Law Professors Sign Letter To Stop The Confirmation Of Kavanaugh By The US Senate

The confirmation of Kavanaugh may have hit the brick wall following the signing of a petition letter by over 1,200 law professors on Thursday. Notably among those who signed the letter were six law Professors from the University of Kentucky. The law professors forwarded the letter to the US Senate, urging it not to confirm Kavanaugh over the allegation of sexual harassment levied against him. The letter also noted that Kavanaugh wasn’t fit to be appointed a Supreme Court Judge.
