India: Corporate Firms In India Bolsters Their Legal Teams

Corporate firms operating in India are expanding the capacity and size of their legal teams with a view to making quick decisions with respect to regulatory and legal quicksand. One such company is the JSW Steel Ltd. Recently, the company almost signed a deal with Monnet Ispat & Energy, but the bankruptcy tribunal stressed the need for small operational creditors to be included. The company finally signed the deal after its in-house legal team led by advocate Rajiv Bakshi swooped into action. Other companies whose legal teams are expanding include Tata Sons, Bharti Airtel Ltd, and Tata Housing Development Company.

 

India: Union Ministry Of Law To Recruit 6,000 Judges Through A Nationwide Examination

The Ministry of Law in collaboration with the Supreme Court have concluded plans to conduct a nationwide examination in order to recruit new judges to fill up vacancies at the lower courts. Another government agency that may be involved in organizing the examination is the Union Public Service Commission. The government’s plan is to recruit new judges for districts and subordinate courts in Union Territories and States. Media reports suggest that there has been a shortage of judges at the lower courts.

 

Singapore: NS defaulter To Serve 13 Months Jail Term

A court in Singapore on Monday extended the jail term of a national service defaulter to 13 months from its initial 10 months. The court after hearing the appeal of Douglas Tan who had defaulted in his National service obligations increased his jail term to 13 months. Tan is a dual citizen of Malaysia and Singapore. Tan studied law at a UK university and was supposed to participate in the National Service program in Singapore but refused. His father had written the Defense Ministry for the deferment of the National service but his plea was rejected.

 

India: Implementation Of The Real Estate Act, 2016: Centre To Send A Delegate To 6 Northeastern States To Resolve Land Issues

The Central government has indicated interest to send a team of specialists to six States, including, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and  Meghalaya with a view to resolving the implementation of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the six States are yet to notify their rules and legislation due to problems of land and other issues. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 was enacted to protect the interest of home-buyers.

An Insolvency Law Committee headed by Injeti Srinivas, who doubles as the Corporate Affairs Secretary, over the weekend indicated interest to recommend a model being used by the UN, dubbed the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in order to address issues of cross-border Insolvency cases.
