India: NUJS Announces Plans To Teach Students About Jurisprudence And Prejudice Using Harry Potter Books

The National University of Juridical Sciences on Wednesday announced plans to begin teaching law students the subjects of jurisprudence and prejudice using Harry Potter Books. According to a statement released by the school, the course will enable law students to explore the JK Rowling’s fictional universe weaved. The title of the course is ‘An interface between Fantasy Fiction Literature and Law.” The course would be anchored by Assistant Professor Shouvik Kumar Guha.

 

India: Gender Neutral Rape Law: NGO Challenges Section 375 Of The IPC

An NGO, Criminal Justice Society of India on Wednesday filed a petition before the Supreme Court challenging Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code. The organization contended that Section 375 was in variance with Article 14 of the Constitution which made provision for the right to equality. Section 375 of the IPC only mentioned a situation where a man rapes a woman. The NGO feels that the law is discriminatory as it does not cover a situation where a woman rapes a man, a woman rapes a woman or a man rapes a man. The case has not been heard yet.

 

US: FBI Investigates Suspected Letter Bombs, As Agency Claims Obama, Clinton Were Among Targets

The Federal Investigation Bureau on Wednesday said it has swung into an investigation with a view to unraveling those behind the eight packages that were intercepted on Tuesday. FBI also asserted that high profile individuals, including former US President, Barrack Obama and the ex-secretary of State, Hillary Clinton were among the targets of the suspected letter bombs. The news made the rounds on Tuesday that two packages suspected to be letter bombs were sent to California but was intercepted by security intelligence before getting to the targeted individuals.

 

India: NCW To Review Laws On Sexual Harassment In Workplaces Next Month

In a bid to address the seeming lacuna in the laws that criminalized sexual harassment in workplaces, the National Commission for Women on Wednesday expressed readiness to hold a stakeholder meeting next month with a view to reviewing the existing laws on prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace. Recently, the #MeToo campaign has trended on various social media platforms. Victims of sexual harassment leveraged the campaign to call out men that attempted to harass them.

 

India: Bankruptcy Case Will Be Heard In Mumbai Court, NCLT Rules

The National Company Law Tribunal’s president, Justice MM Kumar on Wednesday ruled that a Mumbai Court will hear proceedings of the bankruptcy case involving Videocon group of companies which has been pending in various courts in the country. The bankruptcy case was brought before Justice Kumar by the State Bank of India against the Videocon Companies. Early this year, Justice MK Shrawat of the National Company Law Tribunal had admitted the case for hearing.

 

UAE: Declare Any Medication In Your Possession At The Airport Or Risk Being Jailed, Government Warns Tourists Travelers

The United Arab Emirates’ government on Wednesday issued a strong worded warning to all the tourists visiting the country. According to a statement by the Government spokesperson, visiting tourists must fill a document declaring all the medication in their possession, otherwise, they risk being thrown behind bars. The statement further advised visiting tourists to obtained online approval for any personal medical intended to be used in the country before boarding Airplane. Controlled drugs are not allowed into the country.

 

India: Government To Check The Heavy Backpack Carried By School Children Through Draft Policies

The Central government on Wednesday expressed dismay at the weight of the backpacks carried by school children, describing the situation as a bad omen. To this end, the government has set up a panel to draft the relevant policy framework with a view to checking the backpacks carried by school children. Recall that a recent survey report conducted by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India had pegged the percentage of school children under 13 years carrying heavy backpacks at 88%.

 

India: NTA To Accept SC Verdict On Which Firm To Conduct The CLAT Examination

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Wednesday asserted that it would accept the verdict of the Supreme Court whether it favors the firm or not. The NTA and the  Bar Council of India have both files separate affidavits Pleading the Supreme Court to grant them the right to conduct the Common Law Admission Test from 2019 onward. Recall that Shamnad Basheer had moved the Supreme Court seeking the court’s intervention so that a permanent body can be appointed to conduct the CLAT examination.

 

France: Failure Of the French Government To Close Nuclear Reactors Before 2029 Worries Environmental Campaigners

Environmental campaigners on Wednesday expressed worry that President Emmanuel Macron led administration may not close any nuclear reactor before the end of 2029. According to the environmental campaigners, the French government will give the excuse of climate change not to close the 56 out of the country’s 58 nuclear reactors. There have been reports in the media that the nuclear reactors do not emit Co2 in service.

 

India: Women Farmers Discuss Issues Relating To Land Ownership And Agriculture In Gujarat

About 250 women farmers on Tuesday assembled at the Gujarat National Law University to discuss issues bothering on land ownership and agriculture. Their meeting stemmed from the fact that several women were being maltreated by their relatives once their husbands die. The meeting was organized by the women wing of the Working Group for Women and Land Ownership in partnership with over 18 NGOs within the state.

 

India: Establishment Of Appellate Tribunal: Union Cabinet Okays The Appointment Of Adjudicating Authority

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday announced the establishment of Appellate Tribunal and the appointment of Adjudicating Authority. The establishment of the Tribunal is in line with the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act (PBPT), 1988. The appointed Adjudicating Authority will sit at the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The proposed Chairman of the Adjudicating Authority shall decide whether the Tribunal will sit in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai after due consultation with stakeholders.

 

Japan: Admission Discrimination: Women Group Demands Compensation From Japanese Medical School

A group of Japanese women on Wednesday demanded the authorities of the Tokyo Medical University to pay them compensation for admitting that their admission examination scores were altered in order to deny them admission into the school. The demand by the women was conveyed to the University authority by their lawyers. The women have threatened to sue the University if their demand is not met.

 

India: Delhi HC Quashes The AAP Government’s Circular Empowering Registrars To Cancel Documents Registration

The Delhi high court bench of Justices Rajendra Menon and V K Rao on Monday set aside a July 13, 2016 circular issued by the Delhi Government which granted Registrars the powers to cancel the registration of documents. The court took the decision on the grounds that the circular was in variance with the Registration Act, 1908. The court also pointed out that the apex court has several times highlighted that Registrars lack such powers.

 

US: Border Agents Arrest Over 17,000 Migrant Families In September

A survey report published on Tuesday showed that over 17,000 migrant families were arrested by the US border agents while trying to cross the US-Mexico border in September. Officials of the President Donald Trump administration on Tuesday asserted that it was increasingly becoming difficult to arrest migrant families due to the US law protecting migrant children.

 

Canada: Low Uptake Mars The Law Seeking To Destroy LGBT Criminal Records

Despite the efforts by the Canadian government to expunge the criminal records of those convicted of homosexuality by enacting laws, there seems to be a low uptake in the number of people applying to leverage the law. The law was passed over four months ago. The board saddled with the responsibility of receiving the application to expunge LGBT records, Parole Board of Canada on October 1st asserted that only seven applications have been received so far.

 

Australia: UK-Based Lawyer Bags Australian Registration Certificate

A UK-based competition barrister, Adam Aldred on Wednesday bagged the Australian Registration Certificate which will enable him to practice Australian law. Aldred currently practices at the Kings Chambers in the UK. With the new certificate, Aldred will be able to advise solicitors and their clients on issues bothering on EU and UK competition laws. The Australian competition law includes Regulatory investigations, global litigation, merger control, dominance, and compliance.
