Legal News: Law allowing 9/11 families to sue Saudi Arabia criticized by the Gulf states

One Monday the Gulf Coperation Council (GCC) was dominated by the Saudi which criticized the law passed by the United States Congress last week that would allow the families of the victims of 9/11 attacks to sue the kingdom’s government for damages.

 

GCC Secretary General Abdullatif al-Zayani said in a statement that the law was “contrary to the foundations and principles of relations between states and the principle of sovereign immunity enjoyed by the states”.

 

The bill was also condemned by the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

 

“Justice against Sponsors of Terrorism Act”, known as JASTA, was passed by the US House of Representatives on Friday but the White House has threatened to veto the measure.

 

Fifteen out of the 19 hijackers who carshed airlines in New York , Pennsylvania and outside Washington on September 11, 2001 were Saudi Nationals.

 

However, the Saudi government strongly denies the responsibility and has persuaded against the bill.
