Pakistan Government Approves Amendment To Include Blasphemy, Pornography Within Cybercrime Law

Pakistan’s federal cabinet has approved an amendment to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016 to bring blasphemy and pornography within the purview of the cybercrime law, as per a local media report.

Offences related to blasphemy were recently heard by the Islamabad High Court  while tackling a petition filed against the alleged uploading of offensive material on social media.

Additional Attorney General Afnan Karim Kundi informed the court that the PECA was being amended to include blasphemy and pornography under cybercrime law as scheduled offences.

Cabinet Approves Orders Barring TV Transmission Ex-post Facto

The cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, also reviewed the Hajj policy and plan for the next year.  The government decided against increasing the Hajj dues applicable under the Hajj scheme this year, and approved the Hajj policy after a few amendments.

The cabinet also provided ex-post facto approval for the two directives issued to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) –  first to stop transmission of private TV channels and then resume it – on Nov 25 and 26, 2017 during the Faizabad sit-ins, stating that they were issued by the federal government.

The meeting additionally, ratified the meetings of  the Economic Coordination Committee which were held on three days of November along with the minutes of meetings of Cabinet Committee on China Pakistan Economic Corridor which were held on November 9 and 17.

Ex-post facto approval was also granted to the formation of National Implementation Committee on Fata Reforms. Minister for defence and corp commander 11 Corp have been given permission to join the high-level implementation committee.
