US Govt Officially Hands Over Armored Personnel Vehicles to Pakistani Authorities

US Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Ranz formally handed over 11 armoured personnel vehicles (APVs) worth over 280 million rupees to three law enforcement authorities in Pakistan.

The vehicles have been received by the Frontier Constabulary,  the Islamabad Capital Territory Police (ICTP) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police .

A statement released by US embassy, said that the delivery underscored the  US government’s commitment to work with Pakistan for the improvement of its security .

Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Frontier Constabulary Commandant Liaqat Ali Khan, ICTP Inspector General of Police Dr Sultan Azam Temuri, and KP Additional Inspector General of Police Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan attended the handing-over event.

Commenting on the occasion Ranz noted that people depend on the police to protect them adding that both the US and Pakistan would stand together “in the fight against terrorism and in our commitment to security and rule of law in Pakistan.”

APVs Built By Lenco For Tough Terrains

The vehicles are built by the US company Lenco , and these vehicles can be used to move in remote and tough terrains, which will enable civilian security forces to respond and prevent crime and terrorism.

APVs help to enhance police operational capacity and protect officers’ lives while they tackle threats from armed criminal groups, including terrorists and narco-traffickers.  Such groups target Pakistani police officers across the country everyday.

National Police Bureau statistics reveal that nearly 6,500 police personnel have so far died in the line of duty in Pakistan.

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, which funded the purchase of the APVs, operates in over 90 countries to assist in fighting crime and corruption, deterring narcotics trade, improving police systems and also encouraging court systems that are fair and accountable.
